Bundaberg is not the type of destination where you need to spend hours agonizing over the perfect hotel.

It’s much more of a classic Australian road-trip stop.

For that, I’d say the main requirements are somewhere clean and comfortable, with a good location, parking for the car, and ideally a pub or restaurant nearby where you can get a decent steak, fish and chips, or chicken parmi at the end of the day.

I recently visited Bundaberg twice for work and had the chance to check out quite a few places around the area. These are the ones I’d consider staying at.

One of the main reasons to come to this area is to enjoy the beach!

🥳 QUICK INFO

  • 🐠 Top Repeat Activity: Lady Musgrave Island: I did the Lady Musgrave Experience twice and would happily go again. If you’re comfortable in the water, add the snorkelling or diving options to make the most of the day. 👉  Book here: Lady Musgrave Island & Snorkeling Tour from $246
  • 🥤 Fun to Do: Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Barrel: I actually prefer the soda experience to the rum. You get to try a huge range of flavours, and your ticket includes a 6-pack to take home.
  • 🍽️ Best Meal: Macadamias Australia for a nice lunch and The Windmill Bargara for coffee and a snack. But I prefer going old-school here — head to a pub for a parmi or fish and chips. Try the Old Bundy Tavern or Sandhills Sports Club.

Bundaberg vs Bargara comparison

The main thing to keep in mind if you’ve never been to the area before is that Bundaberg itself is inland, about 10–15 minutes from the coast.

If you’re primarily visiting for the beaches or doing a Great Barrier Reef day trip to somewhere like Lady Musgrave Island, staying on the coast in Bargara probably makes more sense.

If you’re here for the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, Bundaberg Barrel, or just need a convenient overnight stop, staying in Bundaberg itself is usually cheaper and more practical.

Having a car is also pretty much a must in this area, so I’ll assume you have one. If not, there are plenty of car rental options around Bundaberg, particularly near the airport, which is a surprisingly convenient little regional airport to fly in and out of.

Bundaberg has a small regional airport that is actually super convenient!

Best Hotels to Stay in Bundaberg

Staying in Bundaberg is usually the cheaper option and makes sense if you want to be close to the airport, shops and restaurants.

You’re also much closer to the Bundaberg Rum Distillery and Bundaberg Barrel, so I think it’s the better base if you’re only staying for a night or two or want to do some of the touristy stuff.

Best Overall: Burnett Riverside Hotel

This would be one of my top choices overall. The hotel is a little worn in places, but the price is usually reasonable for a four-star property and the location is excellent.

The big selling point is the river. Some of the rooms have lovely views over the Burnett River, while you’re still right in the centre of town.

Another big plus is being right next to the Old Bundy Tavern, which is exactly the sort of place I want nearby after a long day. Great pub food, drinks, live music and a bit of atmosphere without having to get back in the car.

🔥 BEST OVERALL

Burnett Riverside Hotel

From around AUD $170–270 ($120–190 USD)/night

You do get a bit of everything here. The rooms are spacious and the river views are particularly lovely at sunset. For dinner you are close to a lot of good options. One of the best options in and around CBD.

Best Value: Acacia Motor Inn

If you’re happy with a classic Australian motor inn, Acacia would be my choice.

The rooms are simple but more modern-looking than a lot of the other motels I checked out, there’s plenty of parking, and you also get an outdoor pool. Location-wise, you’re still very close to everything around the CBD.

There’s no breakfast included, but that’s not much of a problem here. Pacific Coffee Co is nearby for a decent cup of coffee, or you can walk a little further to Indulge Bistro for eggs on toast and a more substantial breakfast.

🔥 BEST VALUE

Acacia Motor Inn

From AUD $110–160 ($80–115 USD)/night

While Acacia is more of a motor inn and less of a hotel, it does have modern furnishings and lots of space. Great location as well and you are close to town for breakfast or dinner.

What About Hostels in Bundaberg?

I haven’t personally stayed in any of the hostels in Bundaberg, although I did look at them while planning my trips. The reviews put me off a little, with quite a few complaints around cleanliness and the general condition of some properties.

I actually quite like semi-private hostel rooms when I travel, so I’m not against hostels in general. Bundaberg is just a little different because many of the cheaper hostels cater heavily to long-term guests and backpackers doing seasonal farm work, which can make them feel less like your typical traveller hostel.

If price is the main factor, I’d also look at some of the caravan and holiday parks outside town. They’re a little further out, but cabins can sometimes be found around the same price as a private hostel room and may be a better option if you have a car.

Best Hotels to Stay in Bargara

If the coast is the main reason you’re coming to Bundaberg, I’d stay in Bargara instead.

It’s about 15 minutes from Bundaberg itself and puts you right by the beach, while also making more sense for places like Mon Repos and Great Barrier Reef trips.

Accommodation here tends to be a little more expensive, but you also get more of that beach-holiday feeling rather than the regional-town/motor-inn vibe of Bundaberg.

If I had to narrow it down, these are the three places I’d look at.

The guests around Turtle Sands

Best for Nature: Turtle Sands

Turtle Sands would be my pick if you want somewhere peaceful and don’t care about being right in the middle of Bargara.

This is much more of a nature stay, with the beach on your doorstep and kangaroos regularly hanging around the property. It’s also particularly interesting during turtle season because you’re staying right next to the Mon Repos Conservation Park, one of Australia’s most important nesting areas for loggerhead turtles.

I’d choose this over the central Bargara hotels if the whole point of the trip is beaches, wildlife and getting away from town. I had a lovely stay here during my visit and the staff is also very friendly and welcoming.

🔥 BEST EXPERIENCE

Turtle Sands

From AUD $320 ($230USD)/night

Turtle Sands surprised me with its modern and well equipped studios and 2 bedroom villas. It has everything you need for a short or long term stay but shines even more when it comes to activities and proximity to Mon Repos. Try to book ahead during the busy turtle season of course.

Best All-Rounder: Kacy’s Bargara Beach Motel

Kacy’s is probably the most classic Bargara option of the three.

You’re right opposite the beach, you can walk to cafés and restaurants, and you don’t need to drive somewhere every time you want food or coffee. It’s not trying to be a luxury resort, which is also why I think it works well for a short stay.

For me, this is probably the best compromise between location, price and convenience if you want to stay on the coast without paying resort prices. Expect to pay around $140 USD ($220 AUD).

🔥 BEST VALUE

Kacy's Bargara Beach Motel

From AUD $220 ($140USD)/night

Clean and comfortable rooms with reasonable prices right on the beach. Expect to pay around $140 USD ($220) for a room here. There is also an outdoor swimming pool and a restaurant on site.

Best Resort: Manta Bargara Resort

If you want the flashiest option of the three, it’s Manta Bargara Resort.

This is more of a proper beach-holiday stay, with larger self-contained apartments, ocean views, a pool and a beachfront location. It’s also one of the more expensive options around Bargara, so I probably wouldn’t choose it for a quick overnight road-trip stop.

But if you’re staying for a few days and want somewhere that actually feels like part of the holiday, this is the one I’d look at.

You get a full kitchen and private laundry as well as a large living space. 1 bedroom apartments range between

🔥 BEST RESORT

Manta Bargara Resort

From AUD $340 ($240USD)/night

This is one of the best spots if you are looking for self-catered accommodation in the best area of Bargara. Families will appreciate the larger accommodation options and you should try Sandhills Sports Club if you are after a casual pub food style place.

Things to Do Around Bundaberg

There is a range of things to do in Bundaberg and surrounding area for all interests. The most popular of which is of course Lady Musgrave Island and Bundaberg soda and rum tastings.

If you have a full day, a trip to Lady Musgrave Island would be my top pick. I’ve done this Great Barrier Reef trip twice now, including diving, and it’s easily one of my favourite experiences in the area.

You can’t really come to Bundy without at least stopping by the Bundaberg Rum Distillery. It’s close to town and an easy addition if you’re staying in Bundaberg rather than Bargara.

Another easy stop in town is the Bundaberg Barrel, home of Bundaberg Brewed Drinks. You can do a tasting and learn a little about how the drinks are made without needing to dedicate half your day to it.

A great road-trip stop for lunch, coffee and, obviously, macadamias. It’s outside the centre, so it’s easiest to visit if you have a car.

  • Mon Repos

If you’re visiting during turtle season, add Mon Repos to your list. It’s just outside Bargara, so staying on the coast makes this one particularly convenient.

FAQ about Bundaberg

If you’re not Aussie or familiar with smaller towns, here are some things to keep in mind about your time in Bundaberg.

Can you walk around Bundaberg?

Around the CBD, yes. If you stay somewhere central like Burnett Riverside, you can walk to pubs, restaurants and the riverfront. For actually exploring the wider Bundaberg region, though, you’ll want the car.

What time do restaurants close in Bundaberg?

Bundaberg isn’t a late-night dining destination, and kitchens can close earlier than you might expect if you’re coming from a bigger city. I’d aim to eat around 6–7:30pm rather than assuming you can wander out for dinner at 9pm.

Is parking easy in Bundaberg?

Generally, yes. This is one of the reasons I like the motor inn style of accommodation here — most have easy on-site parking and you’re not dealing with the parking headaches you get in bigger Australian cities.

If you’re looking for the “wow” factor though, these are the experiences that stuck with me:

  • Lady Musgrave Island – one of the coolest reef experiences I’ve done anywhere in the world. Think turtles, crystal-clear water and snorkeling straight off a pontoon in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • K’gari (Fraser Island) Multi-Day Tour – probably the most unique island in Australia and somewhere I still want to spend more time exploring.
  • Noosa Eco Retreat / Habitat Stay – one of the most peaceful places I stayed during my trip and a great way to experience Australian wildlife and nature away from the cities.
