One of the things I’ve really come to love while traveling lately is taking local cooking classes. Whether it’s pies in Greece or dumplings in Korea, nothing brings you closer to a place than learning how to make its food. And in Hungary, that food is chimney cake.

Chimney cake — or kürtőskalács as it’s called in Hungarian — is one of those iconic street sweets that fills the air with cinnamon and sugar as you walk through the streets of Budapest. It’s crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and watching it spin over hot coals is half the fun.

Plus, it’s quite easy to learn how to make during a workshop and it makes for a fun bonding experience, for friends couples or families.

Where to Take a Chimney Cake Class in Budapest

There are plenty of providers around the city, including the one we went for.

I booked the Chimney Cake Workshop through GetYourGuide, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable, relaxing, and unexpectedly wholesome experiences of the trip.

The class takes place in a cozy studio near the center of town and has a stand alone kitchen at the ground floor.

You don’t need any baking experience, and everything is set up when you arrive. You’ll learn how to roll the dough, wrap it around the wooden cylinders, coat it in your chosen toppings, and bake it to perfection. There are options like cinnamon sugar, cocoa, vanilla, and even nuts or coconut.

All together it takes a bit over an hour to bake 3 small rolls (you can make less and roll them longer) and you also get a certificate to prove you are now a master of this culinary delight.

I found the class size really manageable and the instructor very easy to understand and professional.

You’ll also be able to pick up the tools to make it at home if you wish.

The cost ranges from $40-60+ for most activities but they often run deals if you book ahead.
